Fantastic Zurich – Leading since 1351

15 BC – Roman Turicum

Zurich’s story begins with the Romans, who founded Turicum as a customs post on the River Limmat. The location gave it strategic importance as a trading point between northern and southern Europe. What started as a frontier station soon developed into a lively settlement with lasting roots.

853 – Fraumünster Abbey

King Louis the German established the Fraumünster Abbey, granting it extensive lands and privileges. For centuries, the abbess wielded significant political and economic power over Zurich. This foundation placed Zurich firmly on the medieval map as a center of both faith and influence.

1218 – Free Imperial City

The extinction of the Zähringer dynasty freed Zurich from outside control. It became a free imperial city under the Holy Roman Empire, with direct allegiance only to the Emperor. This independence strengthened local governance, trade, and the self-confidence of its citizens.

1351 – Joining the Swiss Confederation

Zurich’s decision to join the Confederation marked a defining step in its history. The alliance brought stability, protection, and political voice in the shaping of Switzerland. From that moment on, Zurich emerged as a leader among the Swiss cantons, setting the tone for centuries to come.

1519 – The Reformation

Huldrych Zwingli launched the Reformation from Zurich’s Grossmünster, challenging old structures and reshaping religion, education, and society. The city became a beacon of new ideas, attracting thinkers, reformers, and merchants. Its influence spread across Europe, cementing Zurich’s role as a place of change.

1648 – The Treaty of Westphalia

The end of the Thirty Years’ War brought international recognition of Swiss independence. Zurich was at the forefront of this achievement, helping secure a future free from imperial interference. The city’s voice carried weight in diplomacy, reinforcing its status as a key Swiss power.

1848 – Birth of the Federal State

With the founding of modern Switzerland, Zurich rose as the country’s economic engine. Banks, universities, and industries flourished, transforming it into the nation’s financial and intellectual capital. From this era onward, Zurich was not just a Swiss leader but a global one.
